SHSH files are files that make downgrading or restoring possible on our iPhone 3GS, iPod 2G (MC models), iPod 3G or iPad’s, but why do I need to save it?

It’s because apple doesn’t save these SHSH files on their servers. This is to prevent restoring or downgrading of your iDevice. This could be a pain in the ass. But no worry’s I will instruct you how to save your SHSH files to make sure it will never happens! Even though you don’t need them right now they could be usefull for later so make sure you store them!

Methode 1: (If you want to restore)

Saurik posted an article about “Caching Apple’s Signature Server” which means saurik stores your SHSH files somewhere on a server to grab it later when you need it.

How to make sure you can use this?

Grab your iDevice and open Cydia. It should show somewhere a message “This device has ECID SHSH for <FIRMWAREVERSIONHERE> on file”. Firmware version should show which SHSH file is availible for you to use. (3.1.3 is currently the last one, you must be lucky if you have 3.1.2 and use an newer iBoot.)

Instructions:

Windows:

Go to this directory: ”C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\” and open the hosts file with notepad. Now scroll all the way down and add this to the host file
"74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com"
(without the quotes ofcourse). If you done this you can try and restore your iDevice using the stored SHSH files. (You can only restore to the firmware if the shsh files of that firmware are stored.)

Mac:

Almost the same story, go to “/etc/” and open the file with an text editor. Add this
"74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com"
(without quotes once again.) and try and restore.

Methode 2: (If you want to store your shsh files and use them later)

Note: Keep in mind you don’t need to restore! I only give the extra instructions how you can restore with SHSH files.

One of the better alternatives, it takes some work aswell. But that should make sure you will keep your shsh files.

A fast way to grab your 3.1.3 – 3.2 (iPad) shsh files on windows is to use AutoSHSH made by iH8Sn0w.

Another way to grab your SHSH files is firmware umbrella. Here you can download the latest one. (It includes TinyTSS which is needed later) But first we need our ECID key. (write this down somewhere)

Connect your iDevice to your pc and make sure its in recovery mode. (Turn your iDevice off and connect it to the pc while holding the home-button)

Windows:

Get USBView. And open it up. go to options and click config descriptors. Now press F5 and find the Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode). Now try and find the iSerialNumber and copy the “ECID” (just the ECID part with all the characters, Don’t copy ECID: it self. If there is a space, remove everything behind it) save it some where later for Firmware Umbrella

Mac:

Goto About this mac click on More info. If you done that go to Hardware -> Usb -> USB High-Speed bus -> Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode) now search for “Serial Number” “ECID” (just the ECID part with all the characters, Don’t copy ECID: it self. If there is a space, remove everything behind it) copy that some where and save it later for Firmware Umbrella

Now you have your ECID we can try and store the SHSH files!

Open up Firmware Umbrella and paste your ECID in the ECID textbox. select your device (and firmware version(s)) and select the SHSH repository. Firstly try Apple then Saurik – Cydia repository. Now your SHSH files are saved in the Firmware Umbrella directory. If you want to save them somewhere save where you wouldn’t lose your files that quick I would recommend Dropbox. Link There is for both windows and mac an application to sync your files everywhere. Just drag and drop and its done! But lets restore our devices with our grabbed SHSH files! This might need some terminal / command promt experience (should be hard) go to thre firmware umbrella directory using terminal / cmd and type
"java -jar tinytss.jar -f something-ipt-3g-3.1.3.shsh"
(If java fails to work in cmd try “tinytss.exe -f something-ipt-3g-3.1.3.shsh”) replace something-ipt-3g-3.1.3.shsh with your shsh file. Now we need to edit our host files.

Windows:

Go to this directory: ”C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\” and open the hosts file with notepad. Now scroll all the way down and add this to the host file
"127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com"
(without the quotes ofcourse). If you done this you can try and restore your iDevice using the stored SHSH files. (You can only restore to the firmware if the shsh files of that firmware are stored.)

Mac:

Almost the same story as windows, go to “/etc/” and open the file with an text editor. Add this
"127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com"
(without quotes once again.) and try and restore.

Well thats it! (I’m waiting for those grammar nazi’s to fix my post)

Good luck with trying to restore your device / making an backup of your SHSH’s

A new device from Apple. It’s a tablet running iPhoneOS. That means that you could do iPhone games and run other apps on it aswell. But why increase the size of it?

Some of the possibilities could be
-Laptops are slow to boot. When you pick this up you will search the Internet and put it away in an eye blink.
-The size is good if you are home, big screen on webbrowsing!
-Watching movies on a ‘bigger’ screen
-Screen is big, keyboard is big.
-The new apps making good use of it are 10x more awesome then any iPhone app. (GabsNL)

Some of the badsides.
-”Hold on let me take my ipad, ooh wait it doesn’t fit in my pocket.”
-How to hold the device while playing games.
-All iPhone games sucks because of the lower quality. (The CPU and gpu are not even that great.)

It’s to big, its not portable. It’s good for home uses. But I rather would buy a notebook then an iPad.

Written on my iPod Touch.

Quick edit, thanks to GabsNL.
